Semana Santa is one of Southern Spain’s richest traditions and hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the area to witness the event. Villages and towns of every size throughout Spain have their own Semana Santa celebrations, and each province offers its own variation on the Holy Week theme, with many festivities declared to be of National Interest for Tourists.

One of the most important days for local people is Easter Sunday (also called the fiesta de Toro Embolao), which, after the solemn days of the preceding week, the town gives itself over to party time in the crowded streets. Festivities come to a climax the following morning with the running of a bull.

Everyone in the town and surrounding area comes to this event where the partying goes on all through the night. There are funfair rides and various other entertainments including much singing and dancing.

The Seville Fair
The Seville Fair takes place just two weeks after Semana Santa. This is a week of serious dancing, drinking, eating and socializing all throughout the night. The spectacle is extraordinary and generally considered one of the best fairs of the season.

Romeria Ntra. Sra. de la Oliva
The day to honor the Patron Saint of Vejer. This was originally a pilgrimage to a local shrine or church to express devotion to the Virgin Mary or a local saint. The Romeria has now become the festival that accompanies the pilgrimage when the statue is brought out of the church.

Subida a Vejer
This is a timed hill climb with various types of rally cars on the CA5203 road - anyone who has driven that road knows what a challenge it is even at a low speed. Spectators can watch the race all along the hillside road and view the rally cars parked around the Plaza 7 de Mayo.
